Not sure why finding a program on cydia that just reads text files has so far been impossible. But I did find e-books. I have to save things as html which is no big deal. I have Alison Croggon The Riddle on the phone now. Also transferred music files to Dtunes. Pwnplayer lite had problems with some files. Dtunes doesn't seem to. Next is trying to put videos into Dtunes. Using HandBrake.

Freedom from Itunes update

I ran into some problems with the direct file transfer method. For some reason I was unable transfer files larger than 130 megs. I retrenched and I am now sftping with Cyberduck. I am also now using pwnplayer lite. I'm not sure why. But is seems like a good multimeda player. I'm not sure how much I've put on the phone, but I bet I have a lot of space left.

iphone mostly free from Itunes

I did it. I put music on my Iphone without Itunes. Very happy. Open Root then Var then Mobile then Library. Then create a file called Downloads and than you can play things in Dtunes. It requires Netatalk and OpenSSH, but that's it. No need for Itunes. Yeah. Still need Itunes to upgrade even with jailbreak. But the more I can do without it the better. At some point I will clear out what I put on my phone with Itunes, but not tonight. Oh yeah. The music was Superchunk Crossed Wires cd single. very cool.

Election Day

I don't care who gets elected. Not today. Bloomberg, Thompson. It's doesn't seem to matter. Most of the others I've never heard of. I voted straight Working Family, and Dems. It's not like Maine, or the 23rd where the election has some significance. I got run around before I could vote. I also found out my name Jonathan means dove and gift. Cool.

La Hacienda

I've been passing this place every Monday night on the way back from school. I am using it as a opportunity to test the new connection as the drive is now connected wireless. I just moved twenty megs of stuff in five seconds. One hundred megs in one minute. The Ultra Wide Band makes wireless file movement possible for me. 7 gigs in half hour. Only the big video, music and comics files left all 7 to twenty gigs. At 768 there would have been no point in even trying to move these wireless. My lifetime wouldn't have been enough. On the other hand 8.5 gigs transfered directly eight minutes. So direct usb to usb is still way faster. not as convient. with all the cumbersome wires, but much faster.

DOCSIS.3---- Time Warner Ultra Wide Band- First Post

Techs from Time Warner just left. Anatole and Sheila. Not sure of spelling. Took a while. Just as hard for Time Warner techs as customers to get through. Kind of sad. They also get distorted ear busting hold music. However after an hour and a call to Level 3. I have 51/5 ethernet and 41/5 with Airport Base Station. Sweet. Time to experiment. I know speed test are imperfect and ftp downloads will show truer speeds, but it's still fun to see and with enough results a rough picture will emerge. Browsing and streaming from wireless harddrive confirmed. Super Sweet. Done while also seed with Vuze.

No difference with old speed 15./768 on2Wire page load test. 4 to 5 megs.
Oolka speed demo 43.22/5.21
Rochester showing 26.09/5.08
Argonne 26.15/5.04
speedtest.net 45.51/5.19

update

Many things have happend. These are just a few of them.

Jailbroke my Iphone. Crucial. Added a few pay apps including safari download manager and the 3g unrestrictor. Reality is that the AT&T 3g network is too slow to support video streaming. Even with the unrestrictor it is virtually impossible to maintain a stream. Tried to watch Adam Savage on Digg Nation among other things. The time needed to cache the video and how often briefly it would play means if you want to watch video it would be less frustrating if you saved it to the phone and played it from the harddrive.

Still havent figure out the fill structure or how to put files on the phone ftp. I think it goes to var/mobile/libray/downloads but I haven't tried to place anything there. I will soon. I've installed netatalk as well as openssh so it's just a matter of time. It would be great If I knew some one with a jailbroke phone how was at all tech mined, but everyone I know who has one had someone else jailbreak their phone and set it up for them.

Also on the tech front. Another dead hard drive. This is the second drive that has died in my mac book. I now have a new external harddrive with a time machine backup so I won't be so bad off if things go badly in the future. I also have two attractive Hitachi paperweights.

On the same theme of my slowly dying laptop. I now have a external disk-burner. Apparently it's very bad to smoke infront of your computer. I did for many years and now the internal disk-burner doesn't work. The new drive reads all the discs that the internal used to spit out. It's a lightscribe which could be cool.

In other news. My local Chinese restaurant changed owners so I am very sad. I ate there almost every day. I went on vacation and they had changed hand. Absolutely no warning. Total culinary devisation. It's not like Hempstead had a lot of great food options. Not it has less.

Can't think of anything else except the new Big Star box set is wonderful. Lots of demos and alternate mixes. Not sure what more Big Star fan could want except for live Chris Bell recordings with or with out the band. The lines were insane. There were a good number of vendors, but not that much variety; chicken, ribs, brisket, pulled pork and sausage. There could have been other choices. I saw a few people I knew Andy from Atlas Meats, Big Lou, and Doug From Grub Hut. It was fun. The lines where brutal. I will try to get a fast pass next time.

Five Guy's Burger

Here is a picture of a Five Guy's Burger. For some reason they don't let pictures be taken in their restaurants. I got hungry again. Headed out to Cocoyoc. Last post I neglected to give the address 211 Wyckoff. I got something called a picadita. I don't think I've had one before. It's a crispy tortilla with crema and cheese with toppings. They provided red and green salsa. Both are tasty. The red seemed more spicy. Now I'm stuffed. I think I'm going burrito next time. Sorry for non-epic nature of the pictures. It's a bit dark in there, and my hands were shaky.

88 Palace

Went to 88 palace today. Right under the Manhattan Bridge. Used to be known as 888 palace, or triple eights. Used to go here a lot, but last two times I was pretty unhappy. Cold uninspired food with no variety and little or no unusual choices. This time I was happy happy. A dish I had never seen before. Not sure what it was called, but it was a spicy taro dish with red peppers. Yummy. Almost everything was hot and fresh. I'm sure it's hard to keep bringing out fresh things. They have to try to sell through on items, because dim sum can't be reheated as far as I know. Carts end up coming around multiple time with the same items. Things can become cold, or badly over steamed. I was impressed by change from my last visit. It will not be so long until I return. I hope they can maintain this level of quality.

v

SkipDR Classic part 2

I ran it again. I'll figure it out. How hard can it be? Sometimes I'll skim them. Just to get the gist of it. This can be a real problem. I have made many mistakes on this because of this. When I started to work with the SkipDR I did look at the directions. Just not very close. So I was using it completely wrong. Now the disc is playing. So I recommend that you read the directions. I'm going to try another disc. I have a lot of scratched disca.

PS My old man took me to Harold's in Edison NJ for lunch today as a reward for helping him around the house. Very cool. The decor seemed ever so slightly schlocky, but it could just be me. They give a ton of food. Perhaps too much. But since they expect sharing it probably works out in the end. We ordered two sandwiches which would be a bagel platter in most places. You get three baels. I got nova. He got baked salmon. We shared. Then we got a plate of rugelach. Very good. For ninety dollars we had a huge meal. Depending on where you went in the city it probably would have been a lot more. Didn't take any pictures.

photo round up part five

Still working to burn off the last of the old phones pictures. It was a bit dark there so the picture of the food is hard to make out. Man, oh man is it tasty stuff. It's a tiny little place. Although it has a small backyard area. On the way there the weather was fine, but on the way back. It was really bucketing.

After the tacos I went to the Calibella Backery and got some pasteries. They were yummy too. One of them was supposed to have cheese in it, but I couldn't detect any. It was doughy and chewy. The other had guava in it and was not too sweet. Just the way I like it. Too sweet and you lose the distinct fruit flavor.

A follow up to my iphone comments. one problem I've noticed with the AT&T service is that it has really problems acquiring a signal indoors. When I was at the resturant today I could not open a website. I had to walk outside to get a signal. I have had this problem on several occasions. It's very much like my experience in the late 90's with cell phones. You would have to get close to a window to make a call if you were in a building. Weak.

photo round up part four

Crif Dogs. The AT&T internet for the phone is much slower than my Verizon mobile broadband, about half the speed. While they support streaming audio like Last.FM I have found that trying to listen while walking around Jamaica and Hempstead you end up buffering as much as listening. The network is just too slow. It's not so bad for browsing, but You Tube videos load slowly. Check your watch slow. One application at a time is a drag. The iphone 3gs is not a mini computer. It is many things, but it is not a replacement for a laptop. The lack of flash is a major disappointment. Today I had my first major problem. I was trying to listen to Last.FM, and the screen went black, and an apple icon appeared. I put the phone in my pocket and ignored it for a few minutes. Later I pulled it out, and a few of my icons had gotten corrupted. I unsynchronized and resynchronized all my apps. I had to reenter my information which took more time then I wanted to spend. But things seem ok now. It appears to be related to some 3.0 firmware problem according to the Apple site posts I read. They believe the new 3.01 update will fix it. Hopefully it won't happen again. I love my iphone. Don't get my wrong. I do recommend it. But it is not a mini computer, and the closed nature of it sucks. There is no reason to make people have to use the app store. I can load any software on my Macbook that works with the OS. This is the way it should be.

mobile Blogging part 2

So I haven't figured out how to get my pictures from photobucket to my blog using the iphone. This time I was going to their restaurant for the chicken. Here are some pictures. Charles Gabriel's fried chicken is the best I have ever eaten. The sides didn't wow me. The collard greens and the mac and cheese were ok, but I doubt I'd have them again. I really didn't like the biscuits. They seemed hard and dry to me. I will go back again. The ribs and chicken are just that good, and there are a lot more sides to try.

photo round up part two

Some food pictures

I believe this is a picture of the "Angry Whopper." It had some bite, but fast food hamburgers mostly suck. I don't know why I thought this would be a good one.

Riddick's Hempstead branch is gone. I think the other branch is still open. Another real restaurant bites the dust in Hempstead.

This place replaced the Jeronimo Resturant where I ate lunch quite a bit.
