snakemonkey

I was in the village recently and ran across my friend M. Henry Jones. Since I work in Nassau I rarely get to see him. I instantly started blathering at him. He told me to calm down and then showed me the state of his studio Snakemonkey. I was impressed by what he had done with the space and his new studio store. Hanging out with Henry reminds me that I don't know shit about art.

Henry is involved with 3d photography, stop motion animation, and he makes amazing winkys. He has also been putting his Harry Smith show on around the world. A multimedia extravaganza.

Songs of the Day

Today's songs are both by Lou Reed. Hearing Lou's music in high school was one of the major discovery's of those years along with Joy Division, The Replacements, and Sonic Youth among others.

Real Good Time Together- Street Hassle '78
Forever Changed - Songs for Drella w/ John Cale

2 random previously unused pictures. They are from Gala Manor. I'm still not sure how I feel about them.

More banned cartoons.

I watched a lot of Merry Melodies cartoons when I was young, but I don't remember seeing this: WB - 1944-09-02 - Goldilocks and the Jivin' Bears. The video quality is unfortunately shaky, but I think it's worth it. Another I can't believe I'm seeing this moment.

Songs of the Day

Smog - My Shell
Sunshine Fix - What do you know

Sorry I haven't posted recently, but I bought some stuff for my cell phone and have been playing around with that. I watched an episode of Battlestar on it. The phone is a bit twitchy and not that great of a video player, but the audio sounds great. Easy to get music on it. Less so for video. It will play mp4's of around 100 megs so for short files it would be great, but for hour long shows it's a bit less successful.

PS I will be posting more Caroline Know including "Light Flow Days," and maybe "Not a Orphan," or "Free Bases."
PPS I have a whole bunch of things to post including pictures. I will try to catch up. I will also possible devote a post to some random pictures previously unused.

Randathon

Know the greatness that was The Caroline Know. I had the pleasure, with my brother Matt, to not only put on a show with Steve and his band, but to release one of his songs on a compilation. Steve is a great songwriter and performer, and a much better singer than he is given credit for. All in all top notch. The recordings are a bit rough because of a low-fi analog transfer and not having been mastered at all.

Coal Black

Of all the "banned" Merry Melodies this might be the most notorious. I'd heard of it first a few years ago. My brother Matt mention that an old co-worker had played it for him. At the time I found it hard to believe that they had actually made something like this, and even after I had acquired it found its existence stunning. Until now I had never watched it. Now that I have it's just a bad, but stranger than I would have thought. I don't have the words to describe it.

Graham Parker: Now and Then

Because I am obssesed with making comparisons I decided to compare two versions of this Graham Parker rock classic Soul Shoes. The first is from a bootleg from The Downtown, Farmingdale, NY Saturday, June 4, 2005 and the next from The Parkerilla a fairly rare G.P. live record from early in his career from '78.I don't know where, or when it was recorded.

Songs of the Day

So tired. Such a long week. Here are some songs. Enjoy.

The Blasters - Long White Cadillac
The Kinks Johnny Thunder
Bill Hicks

El Porton

I've spoken to many people about the the state of dinning in Hempstead and the only thing people can agree on is that it's dire. You can't go a block without running into a bad Chinese restaurant and the two McDonald's are almost always full, but most of the neighborhood restaurants are empty at lunch time. I've asked people who have worked in Hempstead for over five years where they eat, and they shrug and say the Chinese place, or the Spanish restaurant or they drive someplace else. With my eating tour of Hempstead I am trying to shine a light on the best the town has to offer.

El Porton apparently means the inner door. I've eaten here about five or six times, and have received fairly indifferent service. This was improved slightly this time when I used my slowly improving Spanish to say hello and to order. I've only had two items from the menu and have no idea what their specialties are. I like tacos, and that's what I order. The chorizo tacos are peppery, and tangy with a hint of porky sweetness. A bit greasy, but not overly so. The al pastor are slightly less flavorful with a slightly odd grainy mouth feel, but tender and slightly sweet. I'll try them again for sure. They are both complimented by a green salsa which has a definite kick to it. I order Tamarind, because I feel its sweet and sour flavor holds up nicely to the strong flavors of the tacos and is refreshing on it's own.

Riddick's Kitchen

I couldn't discuss Hempstead restaurants without discussing Riddick's Kitchen. The pictures really don't do the food justice. It was an off day, and I was shooting through plastic. Inexpensive, but not cheap. The meatloaf, mac and cheese, collard greens and banana pudding with a root beer was $13. Although they don't serve barbecue as I consider it their turkey wings and brisket are supposed to be delicious. I usually get breakfast when I go there. Pancakes, grits and orange juice and sometimes a ham steak. All are very satisfying.

Songs of the Day

Another action packed Songs of the Day. Three songs and a audio clip

Ben Folds - Them That Got
Smog - When You Walk
Lifetime - 25 Cent Giraffes
Bill Hicks - Praying for nuclear holocaust from Flying Saucer Tour vol.1

Caridad

One more of the few good Hempstead restaurants is Caridad. It's very close to the courthouse, and is popular amongst the staff for its hearty lunch specials. I, of course, have to go for the more expensive full meals which are also huge, but at $17:50 with a drink are a bit pricey for everyday. Its been a while since I've been there and forgot what my favorite dish was. The bistec empanizado, and got the carne de res frita instead. Which is also very good. They have a bunch of different rice and beans. All of them are good. The salad is fresh but they don't do a great job drying the leaves so it's a bit watery. The orange juice is great and fresh squeezed, but at four dollars a glass very expensive. The meals are big enough for me to have for lunch and dinner. Well worth the price.

This was the first place that asked me why I was taking pictures. I told them about the blog, but didn't seem to know what that meant. They asked me if this was my job and if I had business cards. I may make some up. They had me write the url down. I'll have to check and see if they viewed this write up.

Songs of the Day

These cuts are from the oldest circulating GBV bootleg. At least the oldest I've heard of. The eighth show since their return to playing live. Of course there are recordings of earlier shows from '93 when they returned to live shows, and recordings from '83-'87 when GBV were gigging around Dayton. But those recordings are not freely traded, and are unlikely to be found online.

Dim Sum with mom

We were supposed to go to Golden Bridge, but their escalator was broken so we ended up at HSF instead because it's ground level. The group was my mother, father, sister, a friend of the family named Charles, and me. The food was very good. It was fresh and hot and the flavors were vibrant. The service was ok, nothing like at Gala Manor, but acceptable. The selection was adequate, but lacked anything that I could point at to say this is individual, or unusual. It had all the things you would expect from Dim Sum, but no more. My parents complained of MSG in the food, but I didn't notice anything.

Afterwards we drove by Caffé Roma and I ran out to get my mom cannoli. Two chocolate, two plain. Both had chocolate chips.
